ILLUMINATED POLAROIDS

...approaches photography as a painter. In this series, he conducts planned accidents in his technique, where he intentionally uses outdated Polaroid film (some of it is over ten years past its’ expiration date). The SX-70 images appear with ghostly shapes and tarnished hues which is just the starting point. Palaia continues the process by tearing the backing from the photographs front acetate face. This removes some of the developing chemicals as well as leaving holes, pockmarks and other alien markings on the image. He then transforms the images into large richly colored Duratrans ( durable transparencies) and are displayed in light boxes. The final results are very painterly, brilliantly glowing photographic images of exotic and textured architecture of Rome, Sardinia, Croatia, Greece and Argentina among other locations. Also on display are a selection of original 3"x3" hand colored Polaroids as well as 2’x2’ light boxes and 8x10" color prints of the originals.
Franc Palaia has been working with Polaroids and illumination for almost 20 years. He has participated in over 300 group shows and more than 35 solo shows, regionally, nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of 14 grants, which include the Rome Prize, Tiffany Grant, NJ Arts Council, Dutchess County Arts Council and NYFA to name a few. He has exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum Annex, the New Museum, The White House, Exit Art and in 2011 will exhibit in a group show at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Locally, he has exhibited at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, Vassar College and many galleries and outdoor sculptures shows. He has painted dozens of large outdoor murals and has curated 12 group exhibitions of photography in the US and in Italy. He is currently the producer and on-air host of "Arts Focus", a new Time Warner Cable TV program focusing on the visual arts in the tri-state area. Palaia’s works are included in many public and private collections including MoMA Library, Polaroid Corp., Johnson & Johnson, McDonald’s Corp., Kean University, Senator Frank Lautenburg, Diana Ross, Peter R. Stern to name a few. He has worked and collaborated with many celebrated artists, such as, Annie Leibovitz, Crash, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Salvador Dali and Robert Wilson among others.

The Venus of Ostrava, ca 25,000 year BC, exemplifies the power and influence the provocative beauty of the feminine has evoked through the visual arts. Kleiner is an abstract artist who draws many of her visual impressions from life.
She exhibits a series of works based upon her abstract interpretations of bridges.
These works utilize sweeping arcs and crosses that are directional and energy-forced.
Kleiner renders steel like forms as if her medium was gravity itself, in a series that Kleiner has developed over the years. On view are both her earlier graphite pieces from 2003 and her most recent oil paint interpretations from this year.

Susan Kleiner lives in Pine Bush, NY. She is originally from Brooklyn, NY, received a BA from CCNY in 1970 and then attended Bezalel, the prestigious art school in Jerusalem, Israel, where she received her BFA 1975. Kleiner has exhibited internationally, in Israel, Nigeria, and Germany. She is a founding member of the group Artists' Alternative, and has exhibited at Orange County Community College, Middletown, NY, The Lyceum, Sugar Loaf, NY, The Class of 1929 Gallery at Eisenhower Hall, among others.

Beacon and the South Bronx, both communities that a few short years ago were lackluster and languishing, are undergoing a renaissance fueled by art. Who knew? Now both attract artists by droves to live and work and influence their resurgence. There are abstract-expressionists and actors, cartoonists and composers, minimalists and musicians, painters and puppeteers, playwrights and poets, singers and sculptors, weavers and writers. beacon artist union and Haven Arts, both about two years old, are galleries that serve as focal points of that new vitality, creating space for artists to find their voices and engage with the surrounding community.
bau22: Beacon/Bronx 4+4 brings together four artists from each of these innovative galleries to show their recent works in mixed media, painting, photography and sculpture. Additionally, video artists from both communities will be showcased in an evening of short films on October 28.

Tony Moore, the British-American ceramic sculptor and painter, is represented in international museum collections including the Guggenheim Museum and Brooklyn Museum, USA and Yorkshire Museum and Derby Museum, UK. He received a MFA in Sculpture from Yale University and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award. He maintains a studio in the Hudson Valley near Cold Spring NY.

Franc Palaia's work encompasses several media including illuminated photo-sculpture, hand-colored Polaroids, large scale color digital photography, murals, and lamp design. He also curates, teaches, and makes photo-sculptural outdoor works that incorporate solar powered energy sources. Palaia has been included in over 300 group shows and more than 35 solo shows, regionally, nationally and internationally, and has received 14 grants and curated 12 group exhibitions since 1982. He has exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art annex in New York and in 2011 will exhibit in a group show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Christopher Staples is an artist who works in a wide range of media, including photography, collage, assemblage, painting and printing. Staples is a new member of bau for 2006, whose work is also shown at The Artery in Milford, PA. A resident of Carmel, she serves on the gallery committee of the Putnam Arts Council and recently completed a three-year term on the grants review panel for local arts grants through the New York State Council on the Arts. She holds a B.F.A., Magna Cum Laude from Hartford Art School, University of Hartford.

Elizabeth Winchester is a painter and printer whose work portrays a life of disorientation and geographic dissonance. Her paintings and prints may include fragments of maps, newspapers, collage or found objects resulting in the creation of a personal topography. There are occasional intimations of aerial landscapes or singing abstract, rhythmic movements. Following the lure of detail, layers begin to unfold, veils lift, revealing increasingly disparate details of an idiosyncratic world. After a lifetime of hi-tech in Silicon Valley, Winchester attended the SF Art Institute and has lately been haunting the Woodstock School of Art printing studio. Her work has been shown in CA, FL, NY, CT and Denmark and is in collections in the US and UK.

Half self-taught engineer, half wry sociologist, Timothy Blum fuses a fascination with machinery and science with his amused observation of human folly to create conceptually clean and physically blunt meditations on the social world. Both material and conceptual alchemy are central to his work. Lead turns to money, carpet into tongue, tobacco into a camel. Blum has his BFA in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. He attended Skowhegan in 1993 and studied under Tony Cragg, doing post graduate work at the Kunstakedemie of Dusseldorf, Germany. Timothy has been a recipient of the Jacob Javits Fellowship, the Virginia Groot Foundation Grant, George Sugarman Foundation '04 & '05, and the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. He has taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Recently, he was selected for an artist's residency at the Kohler Foundation. Steven Fishman was born in Baltimore, MD, 1974, raised in the U.S.V.I, and has been a resident of NY since 1993. He received his BFA at Parsons School of Design in 1998. It is NYC where he studied sculpture and art history and this has been the main focus of his work to date. Literally, his work begins with the idea of Art itself. Thinking about Art history, the process of making art, challenging ideas, aesthetics, and its importance are his main inspirations. All things being said, there is a certain quality and humorous undertone in his work that lighten up his arty concepts. With a humorous edge, his exploration of art history re-examines the masters from a post-modernist standpoint. Like a chef opening up a kitchen cabinet and showing off his spices, he adeptly displays a large number and variety of materials in his work. Because his work is idea based, Steven tends to work in a variety of material and techniques with little interest in a consistent aesthetic signature. His consistencies orbit around the notion of making a mark, observing his surroundings and commenting on them accordingly. He has exhibited throughout the northeast including HEREart, The Bronx Museum, Haven Arts, Mushroomarts, the 3rdward, Icebox (in PA), and the Maryland institute of Art. This fall he will be included in an exhibition at the Delaware Museum. His work is on file at the Drawing Center in NYC.

Anne Humanfeld was born in New York City and attended Music & Art High School with regular visits to the Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She studied painting and anthropology at Sarah Lawrence College. She has maintained a New York studio since the early 1980s participating in various aspects of the downtown art scene. After moving her studio from Soho to Mott Haven in 2000, the materials of her pictures have shifted from oil and acrylic paint on canvas to the current Transfer Series.

Kay Reese is an emerging visual artist/photographer who was born in Columbia, South Carolina and grew up in Bronx, New York. She received her B.F.A. in painting and photography from the College of New Rochelle, NY. Ms. Reese is the inventor of Scanography*, a new medium, performance based, photographic process she invented in 2005, using a digital scanner. She received the Bronx Council of the Arts, BRIO Award in 2000, in drawing, printmaking and artist's book, and has exhibited at the Bronx Museum of Art, Longwood Art Gallery @Hostos College, the Haven Art Gallery, and at The Point CDC Art Gallery in the South Bronx. She has also exhibited at Bellevue Medical Center, NY, the New Century Artists Gallery in Chelsea NY, The Mooney Center Gallery at the College of New Rochelle, Fleet Bank at the Empire State Building, the Great Neck Public Library, NY, and at the Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Corporate Library. She has many paintings and works on paper, including monoprints, in numerous private collections in the U.S. Ms. Reese, a former educator, business owner, and college counselor is a career development expert, who has given workshops on "Parenting the Artistic Child", at the Point CDC, and the Bronx River Arts Center and Gallery.

From September 9 to October 8, 2006 Harald Plochberger, co-founder and member of bau will be presenting “bau 21: neXXXt – In The Waiting Room”, an installation in the artist collective’s Main Gallery.

“neXXXt”, a conceptual continuation of Mr. Plochberger’s kaleidoscopic “Dog & Pony Show” installation, his previous summer’s project, coheres by four artists’ contributions working in different media.

Neil Alexander, musician and composer, will provide recorded sound tapestry especially designed for this project, based on Bach’s “Goldberg Variations”. It will be the acoustic component of “neXXXt”.
Neil will be performing live at bau on September 30.

“Rubber Bands” – a loop from his found-footage video series “Unfocused”, represents video artist’s Neil Ira Needleman’s contribution.

Alexis Elton will convert bau’s Backroom Gallery into an olfactory, sense oriented installation, following her own associations and interpretation of the concept.

Harald Plochberger’s installation “neXXXt – In The Waiting Room” expanding into bau’s Main Gallery, and a composite of various elements will contain spatial structures, crossword puzzles, variations on prime numbers, a coloring storybook, and real models. The three dimensional collage will be serving as the backdrop for two conceptually integrated performances within the exhibition – “A Distinct Reception” on Saturday, September 9, and
“A Deconstructive Reading” on Saturday, October 7.

Harald Plochberger says: “bau as an independent collective with an exhibition space operated by its members provides the perfect stage for my multi-disciplinary projects. “neXXXt – In The Waiting Room”, my forthcoming show – bau’s 21st already since it’s foundation in November 2004 - will be a conglomerate of visual and performing arts, and music, dealing with man’s exposure to distraction. “A Distinct Reception”, integral to the meta structure of the concept, will take place only once, as a projected interaction between space, exhibits and audience during the opening of the show. “A Deconstructive Reading” will include texts by authors such as Carl von Clausewitz, Groucho Marx, Simone de Beauvoir, Charles Willeford, Elias Canetti, Sigmund Freud and others – and action.
I am very grateful for Neil Alexander’s and Neil Ira Needleman’s participation, both artists already well known to the bau community due to their acclaimed music/video presentations. Guest artist Alexis Elton’s installation will be a surprising site specific project in bau’s Backroom Gallery.”

STATEMENT

I am an interdisciplinary artist, and painter -
concerned with the exploration of structures of mathematics and language that are visually articulated within a geometrically abstract vocabulary. Attracted by the purity of geometry and algebra, these disciplines provide adequate compositional elements for my projects.
In their own context, science, mythology and poetry of Ancient Greece are of major interest to me. I create images and objects utilizing traditional methods of painting and drawing, and current computer technology.

My conceptually oriented projects intend to analyze phenomena in a media and consumer dominated society. Reality, as it is perceived on TV, and in our daily routines, provides the socio-critical and esthetical background for my assemblages, interactive installations, performance arrangements and documentations – sometimes with artificiality contrasting, site specific “live” features as significant components.

STATEMENT

My interest lies in finding out how the context of an environment questions human systems and asks what defines a sufficient and efficient household. What we are entitled to in terms of property line and the ambiguity of boundaries? How does co-dependency form within a habitat? Can two entities inhabit the same space?

My work attempts to reveal a dialogue using the placement of structures within a space, by addressing issues of boundary lines. Through generating relationships of land as an entity to human mechanism, the context of an environment is inquired. Exploring cultural and socioeconomic systems and questioning how buildings reflect a social order in an age of mass consumption, are an integral aspect of this dialogue. Like the management of property ownership the work expands or contracts, adjusting itself to an environment. The work lends itself to rediscovering the presences left behind by human interaction. The waste exists; dominating in the ephemeral and aesthetic as well as permanent and toxic.

Neil Alexander... A Brief History.

Beneath a grand piano taking up most of a Brooklyn apartment bedroom, a teenage Neil Alexander lay in bed realizing that music was his only option in life.
20 years later, with over a dozen recording credits to his name and a major motion picture titled "The Blur Of Insanity" with his score about to be released, he continues to find challenge and excitement in all things music. He is equally at home in the worlds of Jazz, Rock, Funk, Classical, Theater and Modern Dance; has toured extensively with various groups including the now famous Pink Floyd Tribute band called "The Machine," and at the same time continues to push his original band "Nail," a blend of jazz, funk and fusion.After being dubbed "the loudest musician in high school" for cranking up his Fender Rhodes beyond any reasonable level, Neil decided to start his own group. People said he played "like an animal," so he called his band "A. Animal". This strange and unusual blend of Rock and Roll, Killer Jazz fusion and Ornette Coleman – like avant-garde lasted about 2 years out of High School. When the band broke up, he began to search for ways to make money. Before too long he found himself in the world of dance, where he continues to work successfully to this day. Credits include two grants from "Meet the Composer" while working for the dance company "Soundance" (1986-7), as well as composing numerous works for Choreographers Allison Jolly and Wendy Garton. He also became the preferred accompanist for Donald Byrd, Lenore Latimer, and others; and is currently accompanying classes at S.U.N.Y. Purchase Conservatory of Dance with a stylistic range that includes Limon, Cunningham, Grahm, Horton, Hawkins, Ballet, and Improvisation.Through working with various dance companies, he met longtime friend and drummer Mike Cullens, with whom he formed two successful jazz – funk bands: "Solid Juice" with NY session bassist Glenn Grant and "General Disturbance" with bass virtuosi Wayne Hammond.As a result of his new-found ability to work as a musician within other performing art forms (and a chance meeting with master saxophonist Charles Haynes at a solo performance in Park Slope, Brooklyn) he acquired the position of Musical Director with the "Adaptors Movement Theater" (1983-7). For the Adaptors he co-composed two full length off-Broadway shows. The troupe toured Mexico, Canada and the U.S., and Neil prepared a multi-channel ambient sound setup for "Dig ’85," an installation in the Brooklyn Museum (1985). He has continued to work in theater, most recently as Musical Director/Keyboardist for the Centerfield Productions’ dramatic concert tribute titled "Comfortably Numb," based on Pink Floyd’s "The Wall". "Comfortably Numb" toured the eastern U.S. (1994-5). In 1996 he performed (on keyboards) all orchestral arrangements in a recent production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" featuring well known Broadway actors and actresses.Despite his forays in to dance and theater, Neil continues to maintain strictly musical formats as a working professional pianist/keyboardist. In 1986, much to his (and everyone else’s) surprise, A. Animal reformed with it’s original lineup of Louis Magliente (drums) and Conrad De La Cruz (bass). They played and toured for 8 years but only produced one recording, "Overhaul" (1990) produced by Robert Musso. In 1990 he began to play "club dates" and in an effort to be doing something worthwhile, joined various local rock bands. When Conrad left the band in 1993, he kept A. Animal alive as a duo for another year, and then retired to his studio to record his 1996 release "Alone At Last," which showcases his composition and arranging skills as well as his flair for production and engineering. Produced with long time production partners Nita Rae and Ryan Ball, his solo performances on this CD comprise a sonic journey - an instrumental set of music performed primarily by Neil with many special guests.Some of his other contacts were beginning to pay off: Long time friend Peter Wetherbee called him in to play all keyboards on Funkadelic founder Tal Ross’s CD "Detrimental Vasoline/Giant Shirley" (CGRC). The recording credits began to add up: appearances on the works of local artists Frank 'O The Mountain, Mirror, Virginia Dare and most recently 4Front, featuring drummer Joe Bergamini. In 1996 he joined The Machine, a well known tribute band, and played on all of their CD’s as well.Over the years he has recorded and/or performed with a variety of groups and artists such as Gunther Hampel’s jazz ensemble "Time is Now", Charles Haynes, Erik Lawrence and others. He has performed Igor Stravinsky’s "Sacre du Printempts (the Rite of Spring)", as well as works by Charles Ives and John Cage.In 1995, Neil began to teach master classes in analog synthesizer programming and midi performance applications at the S.U.N.Y. Purchase Music Conservatory as part of the Studio Composition Program. He now also conducts music store and high school clinics in sampling, technology and performing.

“I was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1957 and learned filmmaking in the alleys of Brooklyn. Somewhere along the way I got lost in a dark tunnel that led me into a career in advertising. Now that I have stumbled into the daylight again, I am rededicating myself to tinkering with motion images. I hope it’s not too late to regain some sort of vision.”

Neil Ira Needleman says:

“Working with “found footage” can be an exciting and stimulating challenge because you seek to impart your vision on material that was created without consideration of your wishes or needs. In this case, the material consists of a segment from a VHS video of a market research focus group. Everything about this footage is anonymous: the “cast”, the cameraperson, the location, and the company that paid for the research. I like that.

I came across this video footage back in the mid-1980s when I worked for a mid-sized advertising agency in midtown Manhattan. One day, while chatting with the guy who ran our in-house video editing studio, I glanced up at the monitor and saw a scene that caught my interest. It was an empty focus group research room, shot from a locked down camera. The focus group had long been over, but nobody bothered to turn off the camcorder. This scene continued for many minutes before there was action and change.

I was attracted to the stillness, quiet, and composition of the shot, as well as its potential for action.
In the UNFOCUSED series I manipulated the sense of time, action, and inaction of the shot via various editing strategies, including loops. The videos in the series were, for the most part, short. By “short” I mean an average running time of three minutes.

However, there is one video in the series that needed more breathing room. Much more. And that’s the looped and constantly evolving piece I call RUBBER BANDS. This is a deceptive and gently subversive loop that is, perhaps, the most meditative and contemplative work I’ve ever tinkered together. Stare at the mandala-like table in this shot long enough and you will begin to discover a world that is undergoing violent change. Okay, maybe “violent” is too strong a word, but change, nevertheless, is constant.

During the 53-minute duration of this presentation, the loop makes several complete cycles. I forgot just how many, but perhaps you will figure that out. Ready. Set. Stare.”

Artist Vivian Altman will be exhibiting her abstract paintings at bau, beacon artist union, in Beacon, from August 12 to September 4, 2006.

The show features over a dozen pieces of Altman’s most recent works, mostly oil paintings on canvas.
Once again Altman explores the rich expressive possibilities within her media. These spirited compositions express movement and expansion with vibrant colors and lush, sensuous textures that capture our attention and reveal many surprises. This exhibit, titled "Same Mother, Different Children" refers to Altman's creative approach in developing a new body of work. While her signature of texture and energy remains the same, we may see some transformation in these new works, compared to the pieces exhibited last year at Eisenhower Hall at West Point, and at bau 12 and 13.

Her medium changes, and the energy subtly shifts, but what is conveyed is reminiscent of these past works.
Vivian Altman comments that "the newest pieces emerge with a new passion, as if there could be no other. Each painting feels unique - and then it happens again! And I realize that this creative process comes from the same place, and that is what makes the pieces speak the same language."

Altman’s work has been shown at the New York Brooklyn Museum Art School, Vassar College, The Class of 1929 Art Gallery at Eisenhower Hall at The United States Military Academy at West Point, Edge Gallery, Denver, Colorado, Woodstock Art Gallery, Pace University Satellite Campus at Stewart Airport, Orange County Community College, The Orange County Art Federation and the Orange County Arts Council, the New Paltz College Gallery, among others.

Altman received her B.F.A. in Painting from the State College of New York at New Paltz, New York and her M. A. Degree in Studio Art at New York University, New York City. She has also studied at Massachusetts College of Art and at the Santa Raparata International Art School in Florence, Italy.For the last 10 years, Altman has taught art to grades K-6 in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, Newburgh, New York.. She was Artist in Residence at the YMCA Frost Valley Camp in Claryville, New York and was a Freelance Textile Design Artist for children’s wear.

TONY MOORE: WHO KNOWS WHY?

In Tony Moore’s latest sculpture installation, a provocative assemblage of approximately 150 clay body casts of his own head, we are treated to an experience of tremendous power and relevance for our times. Moore has ingeniously placed a number of these “heads” on the floor, covering the entire gallery, while the preponderance of the casts are vertically stacked in 6 steel cages, as a monolith in the center of the room. The walls have been left blank.

The assemblage is somewhat disorienting, as the viewer’s focus must shift from a downward gaze walking amongst the objects on the floor, to a visual confrontation with the stacked caged heads. These heads are also differentiated from the ones resting on the floor by the striking blue/green glaze which contrasts with the subtlety of the unglazed, but not ‘unmarked” heads on the floor. (These markings are the result of the “magic” of the week-long wood firing process itself.)

What are we to make of this collection of disembodied heads, which appear quite peaceful with their closed eyes and in contemplative repose? Many questions are posited both directly and indirectly by the artist. Among them might be the following:

1) What is the relationship of the individual to the collectivity?

2) How do we as individuals invest fully in our lives while knowing that our common fate as human beings is the inevitability of death?

3) Is it possible for there to be the experience of real freedom in the midst of a social/political climate which discounts the value of diversity and individual choice and makes us virtual “prisoners”?

4) How can we balance our desire to be simultaneously recognized for our unique attributes, while at the same time wishing always to be part of a larger whole?

Tony Moore’s work challenges us to reflect upon these questions, and others. Looking at “huddled masses” of heads imprisoned in cages creates a sense of claustrophobia and suggests a mass grave, but the serenity of the visages themselves may suggest that we are equally prisoners of our own mental structures, and not merely the victims of those who seek to dictate how we should live and how we should think Especially, in referencing death masks, and implying that consciousness may transcend any and all limitations inherent on this plane, there is an eerie suggestion that limitation itself is impermanent in nature, and a distortion of the essential nature of freedom.

Just as the ego/mind eventually gives way to the knowing which emanates from the source of all being, so is the suffering of individuals, a transitory experience, as horrible as such experiences may be.

Moore’s work does not so much present a world view, as expose the need for the artist, as well as for all people to take note of the paradoxes of mind and body, individual and social group, conventional reality and spiritual possibility. Drawing on spiritual tradition, the idea of “radical acceptance”, the courage to be with things exactly as they are is the essential wisdom. The Zen aphorism, “to study the self is to know the self; to know the self, is to lose the self” is an invitation for all of us to first immerse ourselves in the truth of things as they are, and then to reach from behind the bars of our cages to the boundless and unlimited possibilities that may be the next stage in the evolution of our planet.

We must be courageous, and daring. First we are implored to see things which we might prefer to avoid, and then we must choose to embody the truth, not as we have been conditioned to see it, but as we directly experience it. In this way, Tony Moore’s work inspires us to be non-complacent, pro-active and courageous in the way we live. He implores us to understand that although we are each unique, we are all fundamentally made of the same stuff.

Tony Moore is represented in international museum collections, including the Guggenheim Museum, Brooklyn Museum, USA and Yorkshire Museum and Derby Museum, UK. He is the recipient of a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award and Master of Fine Arts Degree in Sculpture from Yale University. Moore resided and maintained a studio in NYC for twenty five years before relocating to the Hudson Valley where he has built a studio and Japanese style wood-fire kiln on a mountaintop property near Cold Spring, NY.

... through the wastelands of theology, psychology, art, literature and sex. Glittering residue of their interrupted dialogue surfaces, inevitably, in their painting and poetry.

Is there a theme? Only accidentally: the ineluctable combination of comedies and catastrophe that dogs our life. Of late Winchester has been much-intrigued by philosopher poet Anne Carson's notion of "the catastrophizing of communication," while Coughenour continues to find dubious inspiration in archetypal psychologist James Hillman's musings about "pathologized" images as a way of soul-making. These excursions into elevated arcana generally conclude in laughter, deep sighs, art or another martini.

Elizabeth Winchester is a painter and printer whose work portrays a life of disorientation and geographic dissonance. The paintings and prints include fragments of maps, newspapers, collage or found objects resulting in the creation of a personal topography. There are occasional intimations of aerial landscapes or singing abstract, rhythmic movements. Following the lure of detail, layers begin to unfold, veils lift, revealing increasingly disparate details of an idiosyncratic world. After a lifetime of hi-tech in Silicon Valley, Winchester attended the SF Art Institute and has lately been haunting the Woodstock School of Art printing studio. Her work has been shown in CA, FL, NY, CT and Denmark and is in collections in the US and UK.

Beyond Me, a one-man show of mixed media work and
collaborations by Christopher Staples opens at bau -
beacon artist union - this month and reminds us that
every object and image exists on many levels. A large scale
black and white photograph of raindrops ("Rhythm of
Rain") show patterns and light and suggest deeper meanings.
Colorful monoprints ("Cosmic String", "Glimpses") combine
with collage to depict layers of thought, image and
perception. A row of long, narrow transparent plastic
strips with images printed in black ("Streams of
Consciousness") is at once eclectic, fragmented and
dramatic. A rusted bedspring is covered by translucent
fabric squares with mysterious photographs and writing
that juxtapose images, thoughts and objects ("Magic
Dreams").

"My art conveys an evocative experience of the world of
meaning and perception through juxtapositions and layers
of images, objects and text," says Staples. "Images layer
with our thought and perception and give transcendent
power to ordinary moments. These are the moments I try
to capture and describe.

"Collaborating with other artists for this show is yet
another juxtaposition of perceptions and ideas -- a merging
of viewpoints to create something dynamic and new. It's an
alchemic process that fits the title of the show."

For some of the work, Staples collaborated with invited
artists Tom Holmes, Sharon Nakazato and musician Neil
Alexander. With Pennsylvania artist Tom Holmes, she
built a rustic chair, while Brewster artist Sharon Nakazato
added calligraphy and objects for rusted headboard
"Evidence of Dreams". Neil Alexander created the sound
for a video collaboration. And from Connecticut, guest artist Augustine
Della Vecchia sculpted a wooden piece.

Staples also collaborated with her seven fellow bau
members. "Christopher asked each of us to work on top
of a piece of art that she gave us, and the resulting
pieces reflect each artist's view layered over hers," reveals
bau artist Harald Plochberger.

Christopher Staples is an energetic and passionate
artist who works in a wide range of media, including
photography, collage, assemblage, painting and printing. Staples is a
new member of bau for 2006, whose work is also shown at
The Artery in Milford, PA. A resident of Carmel, she
serves on the gallery committee of the Putnam Arts
Council and recently completed a three-year term on the grants
review panel for local arts grants through the New York
State Council on the Arts. She holds a B.F.A., Magna Cum
Laude from Hartford Art School, University of Hartford.

A sweet old pitbull with a bit of a temper.
A little white girl in love with a tall, handsome black man.
A group of ill-mannered, penny-pinching, obnoxious senior citizens.
An arrogant and annoying fool who doubts that beautiful women can be smart.

These are some of the characters who appear in the short stories of Marcy B. Freedman. The author has used this array of diverse protagonists to explore the complex issues surrounding racial, ethnic and gender stereotypes, among others. She has stated that her primary goal is to write as honestly as possible, ignoring political correctness and facing up to hard truths. Although there is an element of humor in many of her tales, Ms. Freedman’s works are intended to provoke thought about serious human conundrums.
Marcy B. Freedman is an artist and art historian. She has exhibited her work in more than 175 exhibitions around the country. She has been an instructor at local colleges, a guest speaker at local museums, and a curator of exhibitions for a variety of galleries and alternative spaces. For many years, she has used snippets of text in her collages and photographic compositions. For the last three years, she has been writing the scripts for her video projects and performance pieces. Now, she has decided to let her words stand on their own in short stories and essays.

bau is honored and glad to welcome back again Marcy B. Freedman for this unique event in the bau exhibition space in Beacon. Ms. Freedman gave an intriguing presentation of her video projects last summer at bau in collaboration with Gene Panczenko.

...on January 15 bau hosted Neil Alexander presenting his LOGICAL OSCILLATOR project. It was a fascinating evening after the opening of bau 13: NOISE the night before. Neil created and performed a piece especially dedicated to bau's current show, entitled NOISE.
bau was filled with sounds of all kinds, arranged, organized and controlled by Mr. Alexander using a laptop computer and special software to harness and sample parallel streams of sound, rhythm and melody information in real time.
Once more bau became a platform for artistic experiment with audience involvement. Results of intended future collaborations between Neil Alexander and visual artist members of bau might be heard and seen in upcoming shows at bau.

Bau has established a 2 part submission process. The first part entails a primary review of candidates via artwork samples and bio information received by bau. Selected artists from this stage will then be invited to present samples of in front of current bau artists.

Interested artists are invited to send sample images (6 to 8 examples), and resume to bau. The preferable form of submission is via email, although CDROMS, DVD’s, Video tapes, slides and photos will be accepted as well.

Marvin 'Bu-Ga-Lu' Smith
Drummer Marvin 'Bu-Ga-Lu' Smith is a veteran in the world of music.
His exciting playing has been heard on stages around the world for more than
forty years.
Growing up in a musical family outside of New York City in nearby Englewood, NJ,
Marvin began his studies of music at an early age. By the time he was
eight-years-old, Marvin was already working with his older brother, Buster Smith,
a prominent drummer who performed, most notably, with Jazz pioneer, Eric Dolphy. When Marvin was sixteen, he worked for the Town Sound Recording Company. During his time there, he recorded with such stars of the music world as James Brown, Lola Falana, and Sam and Dave among others. In 1969, Marvin joined singer Rocky Roberts' band and moved to Italy. During the nearly 25 years Marvin spent playing in Europe with Roberts, he also performed with many of the top names in Jazz. Stints with Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Mal Waldron, and Charles Mingus followed. It was also at this time that Marvin first met and played with Archie Shepp and Sun Ra. Both men would prove to be influential in Marvin's career.Archie Shepp asked Marvin to join his band in 1982. For five years Marvin toured all over the world and recorded with the legendary reedman. While with Shepp, Marvin further evolved what he calls "the timing of the drum", a philosophy based upon the idea that rhythm in music follows the Universal Rhythms of Life. One night in 1987, Marvin happened to be at a club across the street from Sweet Basil in New York City. He saw that Sun Ra was performing there all week and decided to stop in and say hi to his old friend. Upon entering the club, Sun Ra band member John Gilmore greeted Marvin and asked him to sit in with the band for a set. After the set, Sun Ra immediately offered Marvin the gig starting the next day. From 1987-1992 Marvin toured and recorded with Sun Ra. In 1992, Marvin released Be Impartial to Yourself, recorded live at Visiones in New York City with Cecil McBee and Kirk Lightsey. Bau founding member, Chris Albert will be exhibiting a collection of sculpture, and mixed media pieces in a solo show from Saturday, June 11, through Sunday, July 3, 2005 at bau, beacon artist union, 161 Main St, Beacon NY. Opening reception, June 11, 6-9pm

A Beacon resident, Albert has been involved in the Beacon art community since relocating from Colorado in 2003. Albert’s artwork largely consists of drawing, and painting in a variety of media. Working in an abstract manner, Albert uses loosely indicated imagery that becomes fragmented by the effect of adding and subtracting layers, the result being an expressive, fluid piece that speaks to a mood, but can be interpreted in various ways.

For bau 6, Chris Albert is exhibiting mixed media assemblages, and sculpture that examine the notion of conflict on a scale of both global and personal dimension. Clashes of culture, concept, identity; Amalgam explores such collisions by envisioning how opposing realities are often coalesced into a shared existence by necessity.

The term "stage" with its various metaphorical meanings serves

as the ideological floor plan for this exhibition.

bau provides the physical stage for the realization of this project.

The four featured artists chose samples of their own

art work which they themselves find are anchor points

within their personal development, and are typical for certain

stages in their artistic evolution - thus reflecting the theme

of this show.

The works themselves become stages for the artists' missions,

their different personal backgrounds, their own experience.

"...stages..." will present a series of snapshots, stills, in the flowing

process of four artists' careers, bringing together the works of

three generations of artists who create in various media and styles,

and who have established their own artistic grammar and vocabulary .

Don Alter's collages are literally stages. Applied three

dimensional objects and materials play with shadows

and structures, surfaces and colors. The works are quietly

breathing, radiating a midsummer night's dream aura.

While looking at them we find ourselves for a moment

being aware of mystery and capable of briefly understanding that.

Melissa Greaves' stage is everywhere. She captures moments with

her camera we all notice - and forget. As a playwright without having to

create one single written or spoken word she enables us to enter the

humane universe through her benign camera lens. Her "Scenes Unseen"

are stills of life in a continuum without bringing it to a halt.

Nothing is staged on her stage.

Claude van Lingen sets limits in his work shown at bau.

"1000 years from now" - not less and not more.

"I am right - you are wrong" - period. Is this the world we (have to)

live in? What happens when you addictedly act in accordance

with that scheme? Just a few of many questions arising when

viewing Claude's works. The graphites and pencils, repeatedly

applying the same information or sequence of numbers over and

over again on paper, eventually break it up, destroy the next layer, and

the next one. The drama of routinized repetition is revealed on a mere

pad, thus documenting the stages of destruction.

Harald Plochberger links two phases of creative evolution

in this show and demonstrates the significance of aesthetic

design and presentation in the arts. Decorative aspects meet

conceptual considerations. Freely drawn triangle scribbles are

juxtaposed to conceptual geometric works, based on Greek

mythology, drafted on the computer. Different stages of the aesthetic

process accompany the final versions of the related works.

Claude van Lingen lays out and explores "The Creative Process

as a Journey" in a talk on June 4, 2005 at bau - based on a book he

is currently writing.

Donald Alter
was born in New York City, attended the High School of Music and Art,

where he learned of Black Mountain College, the prestigious and

innovative school of the arts which spawned the careers of many

leaders in the contemporary art movement.

At Black Mountain College, Don Alter studied painting under the

direction of Josef Albers, Warren Jennerjahn and Joseph Fiore and

textile design with Anni Albers and Trude Guermonprez.

After continuing his education at the Pratt Institute and the U.S. Army,

he became a well known and respected designer of textiles, founding

Design Logic Inc.

Don Alter has exhibited widely in the United States, and locally at

Garrison Art Center in Garrison, N Y, Collaborative Concepts in

Beacon, N Y, Watermark Cargo Gallery in Kingston, N Y,

Albert Shahanian Gallery in Poughkeepsie, N Y,

#2 Round Street Art Gallery in Piermont, NY, and the Greystone

He lives and works in Newburgh, NY.

Melissa Greaves on Scenes Unseen:

"Scenes Unseen is a project caught peripherally_ capturing those

universal moments where you think that you have seen something,

caught a glimpse and whipped heads around to try and catch it_ but

the moment is gone even before you had time to process it. I have

tracked these moments, hunted them like wild animals and these

images are what I have brought home in my bag of prey. I photograph

what others have tossed aside, people, and stuffed toys…the private,

candid moments of another that many avert their eyes from.

These are all the moments that are forgotten in the trek through the

mundane, daily routine.

There is a certain humor in the images beyond the initial darkness

presented. There are times when I raise the camera and people

notice me; they stop what they are doing, and the moment is lost.

Many times I don’t raise the camera - I take my stance as an old

western gun slinger, shooting from the hip with a freeze frame stop

motion gun, rushing to steal their moment, The result is often blurry,

but I think that the soft focus gives the images a fleeting feeling, as

if your driving by and just barely catch a glimpse.

The final images are uncropped, uncut, because I feel that the

background and what is going on around the subject is just as

important in telling the story as the subjects’ actions. You can’t

crop out the peripheral when you’re walking down the street, it’s

there and even when you turn your head to get away from a

certain image it creates another peripheral that you have to cope with.

Furthermore the background allows the viewer to see the subject’s

environment, what is going on around them and why they are reacting

or not reacting the way they are. Billboards, advertisements, people

walking by on the street all play a role in how the subject is viewed

and it is important to keep it in there even if it isn’t always visually

pleasing. However, I try to counteract any inundation of the existing area

by using black and white film and keeping the background in its

place as a prop.

Babies when they are first able to focus their eyes have an easier

time seeing in black and white because it is less confusing and

easier to focus on. I used black and white film in this series to cut

down on the visual overload. I want my viewer to see what is really

important, how life is filled with irony, and the world’s stage which

we walk through is a constant reminder that the lives we lead are

fragile and should never be taken for granted.

While looking at these photographs for the first time many people tell

me that they are very familiar, and I think that is because they are all

things that are right outside of our car and office window waiting for us to

take notice. Very often we don’t look at these scenes directly; we pass

them quietly wrapped up in the conundrum of daily existence. These images

are the background noise, the white noise of society with the volume turned

all the way up.

Claude van Lingen

was born in Vereeniging, a small steel-manufacturing town near

Johannesburg, South Africa in 1931. He studied at the

Johannesburg College of Art from 1949 to 1952, in Paris, France

under Henri Goetz at the Academie Notre Dames des Champs,

and gained a MFA at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn in 1980.

He taught high school from 1953 to 1964 and was appointed

Chairman of the Teacher Training Department at the

Johannesburg College of Art in 1965, and was Chairman of the

Fine Art Department at the same school from 1972 until 1978.

He was examiner for all the art schools under the Department

of Higher Education South Africa on a number of occasions in

subjects such a Composition Painting, Portrait Painting,

Figure Painting and Drawing, as well as Anatomy and the

Theory and Methods of Teaching Art and Art Appreciation.

He was an instructor at the School of Visual Arts, New York

from 1982 to 1985.

In South Africa, Claude van Lingen wrote art criticism for a

daily newspaper for a number of years, and made appearances

on TV and radio talk shows.

In 1973 he was awarded the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Award

at the Art South Africa Today exhibition, judged by a curator from the

Tate Gallery, London and was included in the same show, judged by

Clement Greenberg, the following year. His work was shown in the

Sao Paulo Biennial in 1975.

He has shown in New York, and other venues in the US and Canada.

Currently Claude is writing a book on the creative process in art

based on the very successful course designed at the

Johannesburg College of Art and also taught at the SVA in New York.

Art and the Creative Process—Developing a Personal Vision and Generating Ideas

(working title) is aimed at young artists at the beginning of their careers,

and those artists wishing to develop new areas in which to work.

The book explains the principles of the creative process,

and demonstrates how they may be discerned in the work of

artists of note—both past and present. It then shows how

these principles were applied in art school situations with great success

—a number of students subsequently showing in situations such as

in the US, Canada and Europe, and teaching in prestigious schools

The final chapters discuss how the reader may apply the principles

posited in the book to developing a personal vision, and generating

ideas, and gives hints on various aspects of being an artist and the

different venues and approaches to exhibiting work.

Claude van Lingen: statement: 1,000 Years From Now

Mental time and space have been the central concern of my work since 1978.

With this in mind, I have explored the theme 1,000 Years From Now

by employing both figurative and non-figurative means. A number of these

works incorporate broadcast TV sets or mirrors in paintings that track

and reflect the passing of time.

Since 1992, I have layered names from lists, as well as dates for one thousand years

into the future. Rather than indicating the passing of time in a linear fashion,

the denseness of paint or graphite/pencil in these works coalesces the past, present,

and future into an inextricable whole. This amalgam forms a matrix from which may

arise emotional, metaphoric, and associative responses in relation to experiencing—

and projecting thoughts about—the ever/never changing human condition and events

through time and space.

lived for almost fifty years in Vienna, Austria.

After graduating from the Academy of Applied Arts in 1971 he

was teaching art at high school for eight years.

Solo shows and group show participation since 1967.

Works are held by public and private collections in Austria, Germany,

Switzerland, Great Britain, South Africa, USA.

Harald Plochberger lives and works in Ossining/Beacon, NY since 1999/2003.

Harald Plochberger: statement

Integration of scientific and philosophical aspects is prominent in my

artistic concepts. Especially Ancient Greek civilization, science and mathematics

I feel attracted to. It is the strive for formulation, analysis and understanding

that makes us call Ancient Greece the cradle of our own civilization.

With my work I intend to visually explore the structures of language, mathematics

and aesthetics. Simplification, based on such found structures, determines my

artistic decisions. The ways computers work show many equivalents to the basics

of language and mathematics. I therefore appreciate creating drafts for my drawings,

paintings and objects on the computer, or I create them directly by utilizing specific

programs.

The ancient Greek myths, Greek poetry and tragedies provide thorough reflection

on the human condition. They often inspire my projects, as did the

Herakles theme and poetry by Sappho and Archilochos.

The physical part of my work is equally important to me. Feeling the material, fighting

obstinate problems in a building process, finding adequate solutions for my

demands - these are too essential stages in my creative process.

1000 Paper Cranes, Children’s Concert and Art Auction

to benefit Children with Cancer in the Beacon Community

On Saturday night, March 19^th a children’s concert and art auction will culminate a three- week fundraising event to help raise money and awareness for children suffering with cancer. All the money will be processed through the Noah Cory Foundation.

Some local children have been inspired to try and help their fellow classmate diagnosed with leukemia. Some of these children were familiar with the story of Sadako, a young Japanese girl stricken with Atomic Bomb Sickness (leukemia). Her wish to recover her health was to be granted after she folded 1,000 origami cranes. She valiantly tried, but her legacy lives on, with millions of children around the world enthused by her heroic story, who send their folded paper cranes to a monument dedicated to her at the Peace Park in Hiroshima, Japan. These Beacon children hope to sell and fold 1,000 paper cranes for $1 each. Once completed, they will string the paper cranes together and send them to the Peace Park..

Another aspect of this event will display the musical talents of our youth. Many hours of practice and time will be presented using a wide range of ages, abilities and instruments, from kindergarten through high school.

The culminating experience will be an art auction featuring many local artists. Their talents have been donated to try and raise as much money as possible for this cause. Art works from the studios of Simon Draper, Harald Plochberger, Angelika Rinnhofer, Chris Albert, Gary O’Connor, Dakin Roy, Hudson Beach Glass, Tom Moore, Kathy Feighery, Gary Jacketti will be available for purchase at a fraction of their original prices. The event will take place at bau, Beacon Artist Union at 161 Main Street in Beacon. The concert will begin at 7 and be followed by the auction. Light refreshments will be served.

Bo Gehring works in a field of computer technology that facilitates the fabrication of sculpture realized from artists' complex concepts.
He has absorbed the discipline of computer programming as part of his concept within his own artwork. In creating his Virtual Sculptures, Bo is "balancing the worlds of sculpture and programming, where the process itself is a unique thing." These pieces can exist in an actual physical place if executed, but they also exist, currently, in a reality born from the interaction between Bo, and the program he has created. "Instead of making a specific piece element by element as a sculptor would build it...What I would do, since I am a programmer, is write a program that would generate the actions that a live programmer might do if he were to make a sculpture." But in giving the computer freedom to generate form, Bo says he maintains control over the process, guiding it all the way. He explained his method as "getting away from formulas, and not doing things that are mathematically obvious." It is Bo's extensive experience in the programming field that almost allows him to work with the very concept of what creation is and make that the artwork.
In his discussion, Bo cited Naum Gabo, Antoine Pevsner as predecesors.
Another artist Bo mentioned owing a debt to is George Vantongerloo, who said "Mathematics is only the means, the instrument as one uses hammer and chisel to cut marble." Bo Continued, "If I could time travel, I would give this man the gift of having the tools that I have, because they wanted to do this, they really had these ideas, but had no possibilitiy to have done them."

bau 3 will present the first one man show by the founding members.

Gary Jacketti will present new works in painting and sculpture based on The Book of Art,
a comprehensive encyclopedic compilation of global works of art and their times.

The show will be broken into 2 parts, Epilogue and Prologue.

As an experimental space, bau will offer the platform from which these works will evolve.

Jacketti has spent the past 14 years living and working abroad.
Two years in Italy, seven in Germany and five in Japan have enabled the artist
to see the world's greatest art treasures.
Through these eyes that have witnessed the past and the breath to experience
the present contemporary global art community, Jacketti's work will expound
these horizons.

The direct and physical inspiration for these works begins with his experiences
living and working in Tokyo. The Shoji Series is based upon the Japanese window
and door treatment of compartmentalized rice paper stretched over wooden frames.
These consistent units create a pattern for filtering light.
The theme will evolve around units, repeated, void, filled and congruent.
His first foray using this approach was through a collage of Polaroid prints of a
Japanese cherry tree in full blossom.
The ensuing painting will be presented at the Epilogue of the show, which unlike
its book's protégé, is the Opening Reception.

The Prologue for the show will culminate at a Cocktail Reception on the 1st of April (no joke).
Three weeks of work will be unveiled and celebrated with live music and revelry.

The Books end at the beginning (Epilogue); their inspiration and ensuing arts begin (Prologue)
at the end.

Synopsis:

The Shoji Series was inspired by living and working in Japan for 5 years.
The artist experienced first hand an entire new culture and thought.
Schooled exclusively with Western Civilization, this new Eastern sensibility
provided a new platform, a fresh perspective, a chance for personal exploration,
growth and vision.

A shoji screen is a traditional Japanese architectural element, providing light,
semitransparent and lucid coverings for doors and windows. They are a barrier,
yet not. They are decorative, yet perfectly and simply embedded in the room
aesthetic. The compartmentalization property of not only the entire room, but the
individual structures grid are modern, yet old. Past, future, east, west, grids, units -
all will be explored visually in bau 3.

The show will be unlike traditional gallery events.
It will be presented in two parts, the end first, then the beginning last.
At the first gathering, Jacketti will present the concept of the finished "Book of Art"
along with 2 original works displayed as the departing points.
There will be two interactive elements to this meeting.
The first is a video opportunity for the viewers to interact with light, shadow and
the shoji screen unit.
The second will invite the gallery observer a chance to be part of a
New Book of Art, Book 11.
These will be comprised of writings, drawings, doodles and more being collected
directly on the gallery wall. They then will be collected, collated and delivered either
digitally, virtually and/or bound.

The Prologue, or beginning of the show, will be presented on the exhibitions final
weekend.
Jacketti will spend the three weeks working directly in the bau space, creating
new works based on these themes. He will be working under the pressures of time,
public forum and inner language.
The Prologue will be the celebration of creation, the endeavour of exploration
and the efforts to transform one gallery show into something yet....

received a Bachelors of Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts, NYC in computer art
and computer related media. In 2000, her video Cromagnonmus was juried and selected
for the 8th Annual NY Digital Salon. She was the only undergraduate student to participate.
Karen has worked in the field of new media for eight years and is represented by pod gallery in NYC.

"From the ocean of primitive thought to the plains of virtual existence, where
has the human mind taken us? And has this journey existed all along?
We are indeed puzzles that need to be solved.
My work is a critical investigation of this process."

Cromagnonmus is the culmination of random organization, blueprint encoding, and defragmentation.
These themes can be noted as particularly "digital". This piece reveals the interconnectedness
of man and machine through the organization of language - the intimate process of the human psyche
and how this process is perhaps a permeable pattern in which some underlying current travels.
Cromagnonmus deals with the notion of the universe as a highly organized machine in which
the human being exists as a posterized variable. It is filtered yet proprtional revealing a surface reality
that is disjointed yet somehow symmetrical. Perhaps it is a play on these two opposing elements.

Tom Moore's
personality driven illustrations have been surfacing on post-its, napkins, index cards, and any loose paper that happen to be laying around. He has other means of making a living which allows him to cut loose with the doodles. Moore has concentrated on illustrating heads not bodies with the emphasis on facial expression. He often finds himself creating the voices, and acting out the personalities while he draws-(scribbles) them. Bo Gehring

is one of the first computer animators, originally using supercomputers and the Fortran language.
His works from that period are classics in the genre. His work in three-dimensional audio is also widely recognized.

In this show he introduces a new concept:
sculpture as an artistic process over time, where the process itself is the art
and realization of the physical sculpture is incidental."I invented a scripted computer modelling technique to create sculpture
which I planned to realize in metal. But seeing a sculpture reveal its beauty and underlying logic
as it flew into being on a life-size screen was much more exciting to me than the static object
sitting on the floor. And, free from the slowness of making what Robert Morris has called "object-type" art,
I could try tens or hundreds of ideas instead of only a few. My work has precedents in procedural
and process art but with the difference that I'm concerned with the artistic process itself as art,
not with anything ever being manufactured or not."

After the very successful inaugural show bau 1: "Everyone is Different, Nobody is Special,"

the beaconartistunion, bau, establishes relationships with artists throughout the Hudson Valley. For bau 2 "Newburgh<>Beacon Bridge," bau has invited two artists from the Newburgh area and two artists located in Beacon to present their projects and works in bau's exhibition space, 161 Main Street, Beacon. The founding members of bau are excited to organize their second show reflecting the growing art scene on both sides of the Hudson. Being aware of the impact of digital technology on the arts, it is only natural to build a thematic show around this very current phenomenon. The four featured artists are all involved in digital creation.

With Bo Gehring's contributions as one of the programming pioneers of computer animation in the early seventies we get a unique chance to see where it all started and where it has now arrived. Bo's latest virtual sculptural designs are proof of the digital revolution.

Karen Kuslansky represents the younger generation of Digital Fine Artists. Her sophisticated and joyful use of this contemporary artistic tool integrates audio and visual elements in her works, elevating them to a philosophical level.

The scribbles of Tom Moore are what they are. His drawings reflect an imagination unbounded, as they are created in moments that are free of intention, and full of spontaneity. Using Photoshop software, Tom transforms his frenetic doodles on napkins and Post it notes into a gallery of imaginary mugshots.

Alejandro Dron's elegant and perfectly balanced objects and drawings are reminiscent of familiar forms though we've never seen such forms before. They are like parts of a meta script and can be experienced in both two and three dimensions. Alejandro also utilizes the computer for the generation of his works. bau is lucky and proud to be able continuing the bau project with a presentation of these four artists.

bau 1 is a life size collage. Six artists with different dispositions, different methods, different media presented together, fully intermingled, creating a single form. Yet, within this singular form, the individual components remain uniquely personal. As artists, we are quite different from one another, but we have some very common goals; explore to the fullest our creative impulses, share our work, and be part of a thriving creative community.
